Forensic psychology is the intersection of psychology and the legal system. Forensic psychologists (also called criminal psychologists) are psychologists who offers an expert psychological opinion in a legal matter. They generally perform both forensic duties and clinical duties helping their clients with counseling and therapy.

Forensic psychologists may lead psychological evaluations to determine if a defendant is fit to stand trial. Or they may help determine whether an elderly or ill person is competent to make decisions, or if a death was an accident or a "disguised suicide" in an insurance claim.

Forensic (or criminal) psychologists also develop psychological profiles of perpetrators to help police understand the nature, patterns and motives of criminals. These profiles help law enforcement agents identify felons so they can bring them to justice.

They also study problems of crime prevention, rehabilitation programs in prisons, and help select candidates for police work.
